Calculate the total volume of water that will be "in suspension" in the pipework, and ensure that the sump is big enough to avoid overfilling in the event of a power interruption. This volume (in m3) can easily be calculated by using the following simple equation:- Volume = 3.14 x R2 x L Where R is half of the internal diameter of the pipe (in metres) and L is the total length of pipe (in metres). The table on the right can be used as a guideline for imperial pipe sizes. Please note that different grade pipes will have different wall thickness the thicker the wall the smaller the internal diameter (ID), as the external diameter is always constant.
