Technical Facts

Gamma radiation has been utilised for the control of bio-hazards in aquaculture. Current FAO/WHO data gives the radiation Minimum Effective Dose (MED) for viral control of around 2kGy units, and much lower for bacteria. TMC receives certificates for each irradiation, certifying our dose rate as between 5 - 12kGy.

San Francisco Bay Brand Frozen Food Range

All San Francisco Bay Brand formula fish foods start with nature's most important ingredient - brine shrimp - which make up at least 30% of all formulated fish foods. San Francisco Bay Brand's brine shrimp are harvested from FDA certified solar evaporation ponds used to make salt. Compared to other sources of commercially available brine shrimp, the brine shrimp harvested from the ponds around the San Francisco Bay show a superior protein and fat nutritional profile (measured by dry weight). Due to the relatively deep ponds the shrimp are harvested from, SFBB’s 30 years of experience in harvesting brine shrimp and special brine shrimp cleaning methods, the crude fibre and the ash content in SFBB brine shrimp is kept very low.

Special Freezing Process

By using liquid carbon dioxide to freeze SFBB fish foods the temperature at which freezing takes place is much lower (-65°C) than when using traditional freezing methods. Freezing at such low temperatures improves product quality as smaller sized ice crystals are formed, which do not puncture the cell membranes as larger ice crystals do, thereby minimising the leeching of nutrients when thawing.
