TMC Fluidised Sand Bed Filters

TMC Fluidised Sand Bed Filters utilise the most efficient method of aerobic biological filtration available. Process water enters the filter at the base of the unit and is pumped up through a bed of sand, 'fluidising' the media which provides a very high water to media contact area.

The specially designed sand diffuser bowl, in conjunction with the carefully graded filter media, means that TMC Fluidised Sand Bed Filters fluidise uniformly and quickly at minimum water pressure to utilise the high surface area of the filter sand for highly efficient biological filtration.

Filtered water leaves under gravity at the top of the unit at which point the flow may be diverted to supply another non-pressurised filtration unit, such as a protein skimmer or re-gas/bio-tower, or simply allowed to return to the reservoir.

Non-pressurised units must discharge above water level.

All units come complete with supply pipework including an anti-siphon device, grade #2 oolitic sand, ABS replaceable sand diffuser bowl and top flow sight glass (non-pressurised units only). All TMC Fluidised Sand Bed Filters feature our unique, flexible double O-ring inlet boss system for easy service and the complete removal and replacement of pipework and components.

Technical Fact

TMC Fluidised Sand Filters incorporate a unique anti-siphon device which guarantees that in the event of a power/flow interruption, no media will back-siphon into the supply pipework.

If this were to occur, the Fluid Sand Filter would have to be completely stripped down and re-commisioned, usually resulting in the sand's biofilm becoming unviable.

Pro Pond Fluid Bed Filters

Low cost, maintenance free units designed specifically for the professional pond and koi keeper.

They should be used in conjunction with other filtration elements to create a well-balanced filtration package.

Unlike aquaculture, koi pond filtration is based on high water volume to bio-mass ratios.

These units incorporate all the unique features of our commercial units including low head start up, diffuser bowl and anti-siphon device.

Supplied with graded oolitic aragonite media.

TMC Fluidised Sand Bed Filters are designed to operate with 50-100% expansion of the sand bed (approx. 75% of the total filter column height). Flow rates specified are designed to be a maximum of 180m3/hr per m2 of cross-sectional filter area.

Please note: We supply nitrifying bacteria to reduce the maturation time of filters.

Technical Fact

The maximum livestock mass of TMC Commercial Fluid Sand Towers has been calculated based on a feed rate of 3% body weight per day, feed with a protein content of 50% and at warm water temperatures. Most commercial facilities operate at higher stocking densities and want to achieve high growth rates, resulting in an increased demand on the bio-filtration. To compensate for this, the maximum livestock mass has been reduced.

The maximum livestock mass of the Pro Pond Fluid Bed Towers is based on a feed rate of 1% body weight per day, feed with a protein content of 35% and cooler water temperatures. Pond filtration is based on much lower stocking densities (high water volume to livestock mass ratio), with the main purpose of keeping fish and not growing them. For this reason the specified maximum livestock mass is higher for these units.
