Salifert Freshwater Test Kits

Salifert Freshwater Hobby Test Kits are a competitively priced but comprehensive range which includes all popular kits as well as some of the more advanced tests. They can be used in ponds and freshwater aquariums to accurately ascertain the condition of the pond or aquarium before using any treatments or additives, which is vital for ensuring safe water treatment. All kits are simple to use and produce quick and easy to interpret results.

Iron Test:

In nature, two forms of dissolved iron occur. Bivalent iron and trivalent iron. the form of iron which is bio-available is bivalent iron. When bivalent iron is added to the water then it will slowly transfer, due to oxygen present in the water, to the trivalent state. This trivalent iron has practically no biological function and actually pollutes the water since too high an iron concentration is toxic to fish. This test kit separately measures not only the bio-available bivalent iron but also the superfluous trivalent iron in just two simple steps.

Calcium Test:

This test kit easily measures the calcium level in the aquarium. Calcium is vital for optimum fish growth and most GH additives do not contain calcium which can lead to a calcium deficiency in the fish. Most plants and fish thrive when the calcium content is approx 20 mg/L.

pH Test:

Most plants and fish require a pH value of 7 - 7.5. This test measures in the 6.0-9.0 range giving a good indication of the pH value in steps of approximately 0.25.

GH (General Hardness) Test:

Plants and fish usually require a GH value of 8 - 12 dGH. This test kit makes it possible to obtain a precise measurement of the general hardness level of the water and has a very stable colour indicator.

KH (Carbonate Hardness) Test:

Plants usually require a KH value of 4 - 8 dKH. This test kit allows an accurate measurement of the carbonate hardness value by taking a sample using a graduated syringe. Gives a very sharp colour change.

Ammonia Test:

This measures the total ammonia content (ammonia + ammonium) in just a few minutes. Ammonia is a strong fish toxin and an elevated level of ammonia in the aquarium (0.5 mg/L or higher ) indicates that the biological processes in the tank are not functioning properly.

Nitrite Test:

This essential test accurately and quickly measures the nitrite value in the water. Nitrite is extremely poisonous to fish and values higher than 0.1 mg/L should be avoided.

Nitrate Test:

High nitrate levels (more than 10 mg/L) can result in unwanted algae growth and have a negative impact on the health and reproduction of fish. This kit allows the levels of nitrate in the water to be monitored helping to avoid poor water quality.

Phosphate Test:

This gives clear information about excess phosphate fertilization (which can cause a disturbance of the biological equilibrium and increase the chance of algae growth) or phosphate deficiency (which may inhibit plant growth). For good plant growth a phosphate level of 0.5 mg/L is advisable.

The Salifert Organics test is a semi-quantitative measure for such compounds, and no other manufacturer offers such a test kit.

Oxygen Test:

This kit makes a rapid oxygen measurement possible. The optimum oxygen level is at least 8mg/L. Too low an oxygen content might result in an accumulation of toxic ammonia and oxygen deficiency for fish.

CO2 Test:

This measures the carbon dioxide content using just two reagents. It is becoming widely acknowledged that there is an optimum level of CO2 required to ensure plants flourish in the aquarium and this level is approx 15 - 20 mg/L.

Activated Carbon Test:

This measures the remaining capacity of the carbon in use and is ideal for determining when carbon needs to be changed.
